Europe has a lot going for it: stunning landscapes, delicious food, medieval castles, world class museums, and amazing shopping. There are magnificent hotels if you’re able to spend, or plentiful hostels if you’re on a shoestring budget. But one of the things we love most about Europe is how unbelievably easy it is to get from country to country.
If you can spare a couple weeks away from work, you don’t have to settle on just one European city, but can visit four or five (or more!) of them on a single trip across the pond. Here are our top 10 places to travel while in Europe:
1. Venice
Italy’s magnificent “City of Water” is in danger. Rising sea levels are threatening the viability of this World Heritage site, so you’ll want to check out Venice’s amazing canal system soon! Between gondola boat rides and romantic restaurants on every corner, you’ll fall in love all over again in Venice.
2. Dubrovnik
The Croatian city of Dubrovnik has been soaring in popularity over the past several years, and for good reason. First, it’s stunningly beautiful, surrounded by mountains and sea. Secondly, it’s still relatively affordable when compared to other European destinations. Don’t be scared off by the language, you’ll find enough English-speakers to get by!
3. London
While it’s one of the most expensive cities to visit, most would agree that London is worth it! Enjoy the classic sites – Big Ben, Buckingham Palace and the London Eye. London is also home to many fantastic, world-class museums that you’ll definitely want to check out – you could spend a week there and only see a fraction of them!
4. Valencia
If you’re travelling with children, the Spanish city of Valencia is a great pick. Not as overwhelming as Madrid or Barcelona, Spain’s third largest city has enough history, culture, beach and action to keep you busy for days! Tour the futuristic City of Arts and Science museums, or let the kids run around in the massive Jardin del Turia park which runs through the city.
5. Vienna
Vienna has been voted as the best country in the world to live for a couple of years now. And even if you can’t move there, you’ll certainly enjoy a visit to Austria’s exotic capital. Between the amazing architecture, sophisticated art scene, and fine dining options, you’ll see why the Austrians come out on top.
6. The Swiss Alps
Pick any number of Alpine villages in Switzerland (Interlaken, Zermatt, St. Moritz) and you’ll be wowed by the magnificent natural beauty that the country is home to. Soaring mountains, crystal clear lakes, and lush green valleys are just a few of the features that will take your breath away. Summer or winter, there will be plenty to do to keep you both active and inspired!
7. Amsterdam
The capital of the Netherlands really has something for everyone. History buffs can visit the Anne Frank House. Art lovers can see the largest collection of Van Goghs at the Van Gogh museum. Bicycling enthusiasts can spend pretty much the entire day on bike, thanks to the city’s seemingly endless bike lanes. And everyone will appreciate Amsterdam’s amazing food halls and markets!
8. Santorini
When you see pictures or postcards of bright white homes with blue roofs overlooking the shining Mediterranean Sea, that’s likely Santorini. And while Athens usually gets a lot of attention, the Greek city of Santorini has a lot to offer as well! The island is well-known for its wines, so wine enthusiasts should check out Santorini’s many wineries. Or, relax with your loved ones on a catamaran cruise over Greece’s crystal-clear waters.
9. Berlin
Germany’s capital is bursting with different activities for tourists to keep busy. Check out the Berlin Wall or visit the Holocaust Memorial to learn more about Germany’s history. While Berlin is a city of nearly 4 million people, you’ll find plenty of peaceful greenspace incorporated into the city’s plan when you need a break from the hustle and bustle.
10. Paris
It would be nearly impossible to do an article on the top ten places to travel while in Europe and NOT include the French capital. Visiting the City of Love is a bucket list trip for so many, and for good reason. Paris has so much to offer: stunning architecture, some of the greatest museums in the world, lush gardens, and patisseries on every corner. You just can’t go wrong!
So, there you have it, our best travel spots in Europe! There’s so much to see and appreciate in Europe, but hopefully this list gives you a few ideas for starting points. Happy vacation-planning!
