With Mother’s Day around the corner, you may be going from store to store (or, more likely, website to website) searching for the perfect gift to let Mom know how you feel. Our society has us trained to purchase things for others to express our gratitude, appreciation and love.
But here’s a little secret – all Mom probably wants is more time with you, not more tchotchkes to put on her shelves. Our advice? Plan a fun activity, just for you and Mom! Here are our top ideas:
Sign Up for a Local Cooking Class
Check out colleges, culinary schools and kitchen supply stores in your area to find classes that are open to the public. Pick a cuisine that’s new and adventurous for both of you. Maybe it’s learning how to make sushi, or croissants from scratch, or even how to craft the perfect cocktail. Learning a new skill together is a ton of fun and will definitely be a memorable bonding experience.
Hire a Photographer and Do a Photo- Shoot
Pick a location that has sentimental value to both of you. Get dolled up, or have some fun with it and re-enact classic photos of you and Mom in your younger years! Best of all, you’ll come away with keepsake photos that capture your special relationship.
Practice Your Floral Arranging Skills
OK, so this one does kind of involve buying stuff, but if Mom loves flowers (and there’s a good chance she does), why not buy a nice variety of bulk flowers and greenery and try your hands at some professional-level floral arranging? Alternatively, you could pick up some herbs and/or vegetable plants and create container gardens for your patio. Either way, you’ll each leave with a sweet memory and a living reminder of your day together.
Book a Spa Day
A classic mother-daughter option, although certainly could be a mother-son outing as well. Book yourselves massages, facials, or pedicures (or all three!) and allow plenty of time between services for relaxing together (no cell phones!!). The result? You’ll leave the spa feeling blissed out and totally reconnected.
Happy Mother’s Day!
